Where has everyone gone?

I'm coming up on my 3rd rez-day this month and could not help but to reflect on my experiences in Second Life during the last 3 years. Today my mind wandered to the people I have met and began to wonder where have so many of them gone? There have been several people that I knew very well and considered my closest friends in SL and they have disappeared from existence. It's really so sad to me that these people are gone. Although I wonder if it is them I miss or rather the peaceful intimacy that I experienced with each of them.

Take for example, Andrew...I met him at a wall of freebie textures. He was one of my first friends. He encouraged me to build and to set up shop. He'd make little trinkets for me like wings scripted with a caging device. He began to spend more time in his RL and eventually we spent less time together. Tonight I took a peek at his profile, which led me to a dead xstreetsl.com link. I looked a little further and discovered that he's been wiped from SL. Gone.

White taught me to build. He had an amazing way with prims and I was lucky to have him as a teacher. He also encouraged me to make silks and put them out in a store. It was because of him that I opened up my silk shop. I enjoyed the time he and I spent together building...hours of prim torture can be enjoyable when done with friends. And he too is gone.

And Wolf was always a good friend to me. He listened intently and made brilliant suggestions when I was having difficulties in SL and RL. He always greeted me warmly and showed his appreciation for me. Eventually he became overwhelmed with women constantly vying for his attention. But then again, that's what happens when one runs a fetish club. It was too much for him and he removed himself from SL. Another one gone.

There are maybe a handful more of people that I knew better than most and today you would barely be able to find a trace of them. I suspect that some of them are living lives as an alt. And if that is the case I can't help but to be put off that they are out there and can see me, while I will never know what became of them.

I scratch my head as I ponder where these people have gone. Have I run them off? Do other people in SL have a history filled with voids where avatars used to be? Why is it that my friends not only leave me, but they leave their avatars behind as well. Is it me? It's them, right?

Reflections of a Shopkeeper: Location - Style and Aesthetics

For a long time now I've have a small corner shop at Juicy and specialized in wedding rings and custom jewelry. I recently have taken an interest in larger builds including residential structures, furniture and landscaping. I found that my tiny shop was bursting a the seams and I decided to take a sizable parcel on the corner of the sim. As I venture forth on my journey into shop-keeping I'm finding plenty of challenges and surprises worth sharing. And so I begin a new segment entitled: Reflections of a Shopkeeper.

Location - Style and Aesthetics:
I started out a bit anxious to get into something big and as soon as Gogo, my landlady, said she had a space available I grabbed it. However I didn't take a lot of time to think about how my shop would fit into the location. It was a nice corner lot with a good view. But it was sandy and beachy and my shop concept is (will be eventually) a lush green garden. I really struggled to make things work, but the build just was not "clicking" for me. I mentioned to Gogo that i loved the grass she had put in for the Juicy Birthday event and she should keep it. She suggested that I move over to the Juicy del Mar sim. It took me a few hours of deliberating because I had already put Landmarks in everything and pasted my SLURL everywhere. But I stood at the Juicy del Mar parcel for awhile and realized it was where I needed to be. The moment I rezzed the first prim I knew I had made the right choice. And so I present to you: Queen & Co. @ Juicy del Mar:

If you're thinking about opening a shop or moving your shop it's so important to consider not only the pricing, but the environment and location. The parcel I have sits on a green landscaped and somewhat whimsical sim. It works so well for me, but I know others that would be much better suited to a completely different style. Take a little time to find something that fits your aesthetic. It will make your experience so much more enjoyable. You'll also save yourself time and frustration if you can find the right location first time around because you'll avoid having to update slurls and LMs everywhere.

I think people like stability in their shopping so try not to make a move too often. HOWEVER, if you're not "feeling it" then find something else. There's no reason to make yourself unhappy. Shop-keeping doesn't have to be and should not be all about the L$s. You've got to enjoy what you're doing and where you're doing it and choosing the right location is a great start towards success. Right?

I have been using flickr for over two years now. Most of the pictures I take are from snapshots in-world and once in a great while I'll make an attempt at some photoshop fanciness. Consequently I have very few pictures that get a lot of action. When I do have a picture with a lot of view I can't help but to wonder why. And so I give you this:

It is a picture of me dancing at UFOWATCHTOWER with the Star Trek Crew. AND, it got 91 views in less than a day. That's a lot of views. I can only imagine that it is either the "UFO" or the "Star Trek" and if that's the case I'm moving to outer space.

YOU can do it too if you're so inclined by using the soooo easy SLURL builder. It will create a slurl that directs people to a location inworld and allows you to customize the slurl to include a title, a picture and a short message.

You'll need to have
1. The slurl information (here's a Torley post on slurls) for the location you desire
2. A URL for the picture (if you don't have one you can use a photo hosting site. i like flickr.) , and
3. A few words to include in the description. (generally you'll want to arrange them into a cohesive phrase or sentence.)

Pearls of Wisdom: It's OK to take a break.

Last night I was busy in SL diddling with some builds in my workshop while in RL I was tending to a creature recovering from the flu. In the midst of it all I received the most uncomfortable notice "XXX has dissolved your friendship." This is a strange feature included in the Emerald Viewer and while I find it interesting to know when I am dropped from a friends list, it leaves me wondering, "Wha?! What did i do?!" I deliberated for a few minutes and decided that my relationship with this person was important enough that I could not just let her go. I sent a quick IM to her letter her know and we had a conversation for a few minutes.

As it turns out she recently lost a dear loved one. And, as a result she's taking some time to evaluate her priorities and set her lives in order. For the moment SL just isn't very high on her list. And so she was engaging in some SL cleansing. I've done this so I am familiar with the process. It usually occurs when a person becomes disenchanted by SL or the people in their SLives. Thier profile gets cleaned of all but those that are the very closest, their friends list is pared down to a minimum, land is sold off, and in some cases inventory is purged. (ugh, i'm squirming just thinking of that extreme.) Often the external internet presence is also given a once over (i.e. plurk vacation, flickr accounts gone private, blogs put on hold.)

It astonished me that in our conversation she was very careful to assure me that it was not anything that I had done. Her words were laced with guilt for leaving friends behind in SL. I could sense the tug she felt between her desire to experience more in her RL and the obligation she felt to the friendships in her SL. My heart goes out to my friend and to others like her that feel torn between the two worlds. I'm not sure there is anything but experience that can teach a person how to cope in that situation, but I can assure you that it's possible to have both lives.

For those of you that are taking a break. It's OK. RL comes first. You're not abandoning anyone. We know this is hard for you and we'll support you in your decision.

For those of you that have a friend taking a break. It's OK. RL comes first. You're not being abandoned. This is hard for your friend that is leaving. Make sure they know that you support their decision. Let them go in peace. Please.

I just realized that the first time I ever rezzed an avatar in Second Life was October 15, 2006. I'm a little stunned that I'm still here 3 years later. Perhaps at a later date I'll reflect more on what that 3 years means to me. But this post is for my darling first avatar. I won't tell you her name. Maybe because for as open as I am in SL, I like the idea of having at least one thing that I keep to myself. She spends no time in world, and the few friends she had are long gone, but it would not be right to let her 3rd rezz-day pass without some acknowledgment of her existence. Happy Rezz-day darling, see you next year.

Simple Pleasures

I spent the day building and it was wonderful. In the morning I was treated to a few hours of tunes from a shirtless friend. In the afternoon my swine flu suffering friend spent time discussing design challenges with me while he faded in and out of a codeine trance. Eventually it was time to say good night to all the good little prims and return to my tranquil home. I wasn't yet ready for bed so I took my T-rex, kissyface, out for a walk around the island. We visited the nighbor's chicken coops until kissyface got a little rambunctious and I had to take him home. On the way we stopped at a friend's and she gave kissyface a delicious bone. I got an ice cream. Sometimes happiness really is that simple.

BB: hmmm. Here's the poetic answer. I'm totally motivated by the beats and the sounds I can create with a mixer, and the way it moves people. Sound is amazing manipulator of the mind. But really, I wouldn't be doing all of this if it wasn't for Init. He saw it in me and pushed me to go for it. So really, I have him to thank.

A year ago Codebastard Redgrave opened up the Rouge sim. Since then Rouge has blossomed into an amazing multi-purpose environment. Today we celebrated the anniversary with 12 hours of entertainment featuring DJs Asrael Hax, Amanda Shinji, Nexeus Fatale, Bridgitte Boucher, Adamatic Aeon and Fine Caliber. In addition the guests were treated to a special performance presented by Glamouramama Boa and her amazing group of SLag dancers with music by DJ xSaraho Mornington.
Thank you to everyone that came out to celebrate and congratulations to Codie for one year of Rouge!!!!

Turns out the SL6B festivities planned by The Underground were seriously debilitated by the failure of the SL6B Dimension sim to hold more than 40-50 avatars at one time.

If you happen to make your way to The Underground's SL6B parcel and we're nowhere to be found there's a good probability that we're making party at Nick Nack. Thank you Mr. Ideal Flow for opening up your home to The Underground. And thank you Briddy for serving cheese and crackers and tapping into you personal box of white zin.

Big thanks to Dane Koba, Silus Kappler, Jasminx Saenz, Bridgitte Boucher, Init Hubble and Lanne Wise who kept the party going all day and into the night. In the end, this is really what The Underground is all about, isn't it? Collectively we make the music, the party, the memories.

SL6B sim....come back, please!?

As you may already know, our group, The Underground is an exhibitor at SL6B. Briddy and I have been working all week on preparing for the SL6B celebration that begins on June 23rd. We were given a deadline of June 20th, midnight to have our build complete. As of Saturday morning we were tinkering with a few things, sprinkling some glow here and there, and of course, planting some flowers in the biodomies. I came in a little later to move some prims around and mid-edit I was kicked from SL. As it turns out there is some massive emergency maintenance in progress.......

The big vacant space filled with water is where the sim should be. And it ain't. In the meantime instead of getting all freaked out about a SL failure, we're taking happy pills and working out the UBER-FANTASTIC DJ line up!!!!! Get ready to peek into the future of the music scene brought to you by The Underground!!

Open Court Sessions @ The Underground Basketball Courts - WIN!!

Today was Open Court Session at the Underground Basketball Courts and it was an amazing success!!! Operating within The Underground group, Briddy and I organize electronic music events. In the past we've done open courts and thought it was time for another. The concept is to do an open call for DJs to come and play one hour sets, head to head. We donned our UG uniforms and headed off to The Underground Courts.

Before we knew it, the DJs were lined up and ready to go. At some points we neared max load on the sim. The entire day we had a great crowd of people coming and going. It was really fantastic to hear great tunes, enjoy our friends and make new friends too! I'm so thankful I have Briddy to do all the work so I can relax and take all the credit. (Seriously, I'm absolutely thankful for all she does.) And I'm lovin' on all the members of the music community that came out today to have a good time.

I want to make sure to say thank you to all the DJs that brought us tunes throughout the day: Bridgitte "Briddy the Diva" Boucher, Jasminx Saenz, NuRito Inshan, Luigy Balhaus, DJAmpz Dinzel, Goodes Bade, DJOsiris Darkstone, Mbone Pizzaro, Coggy Nikolaidis, Ideal Flow, and Genki Dreamscape. We love you all!! *runs around giving thank you hugs (and gropes)*

And finally, I present to you today's winner of The Underground Hot Mess of the Day Award... The North Court. This is only the second time in history of the award that a location won the award and it's well deserved. [Previously my house had won after something went horribly awry when I tried to move it just a teeny bit] Nothing shouts out "hot mess" like hippo balloons, a tuba player and a Barbie bedroom set. Well done!!

Pearls of Wisdom: Two sides to every story

In my time in Second Life I've been witness to countless dramas as a distant observer as well as a reluctant confidante. Usually I'm exposed one person's detailed account of the situation and left to collect the other side of the story through observation. As you may imagine it results in a slanted view of the story, and if I'm not careful, a prejudicial demeanor towards the other party.
It just happened again and I'm compelled to share some words of wisdom. I could not have stated it better myself.

Two Second Life residents on Plurk were going through some "issues." and one party offered to their readers to be contacted in-world to give the truth, not fabrications. Yes, I rolled my eyes as I thought to myself "whose truth?" Then, the most wondrous angels of reason descended upon the Plurk stream:

Tenshi: Everyone fabricates their own side.
Tenshi: Everyone sees history differently.
Tenshi: There's a huge difference between a lie and a different view.
Tenshi: I'm not saying that's what is going on - I don't have a damn clue - I'm just running my mouth.

Amazing!! I was thankful to be instantly reminded there are at least two sides to every story. And the storyteller's account is almost always colored by their own perceptions. It can be very confusing. Be careful of judging other people based on information that is not received first hand. And be careful of great story tellers, they can cloud your vision.

Now, I know this, but it's good to be reminded. I prefer to listen and observe and come to my own conclusions. Often, it's not the underlying issue, but rather an evaluation as to how each party handled the matter. That in itself can be the biggest clue to a person's true character and the most determinative as to how I choose to conduct myself when relating to each party.

I like to Plurk. It keeps me in touch with my SL friends even when I'm not in SL. It's allowed me to meet so many new people and to peek into their SLives and many of their real lives.

This morning my Plurk timeline was abuzz with the tragic news of the death of the RL person behind the SL avatar, Rheta Shan. I never had the pleasure of knowing Rheta but I couldn't help but to feel heartache for those around me that were close to her. My heart goes out to her family and friends, in here and out there. Throughout the day people were able to share the news, their reactions, and their remembrances of Rheta in Plurk.

But there were other topics of discussion today within Plurkdom including: hunt/freebie critiques, criticism and backlash. Someone gushed with joy as she announced her long awaited engagement. There were many hellos and good nights. At one point some plurkers were suffering the predictable breakdown of xstreetsl.com. It was a day full of angst, joy, heartache and love.

When I got home I was suffering from the effects of allergy medication, heartache, and hormones . I turned on the 'puter and stared at the Plurk time line for too long. I'm not even sure what I was looking for. Finally, I realized that on this day negative and sad thoughts were screaming the loudest at me and coming from all directions. I took a break and read a little bit of Midnight Sun. The character, Edward, is a mind-reading vampire. So . . .

That's when I began to wonder about Plurk....Is this what it would be like to be able to listen to people's thoughts? I'm privy to the thoughts of about 200 people in Plurk. And to the thoughts of all the people that respond. Some thoughts are louder, and more emotional. Some are simple and fact based. But each is there for me to read if I choose. I imagine that a Plurk time line is very similar to having the ability to listen into the intimate thoughts of the people around me. After a day like today I know that I need to remain diligent in what I choose to read or my head may implode. Hmmm, that would not be so good.

Queenie Hunts!! : Keys to the VIP Hunt

I did a hunt this weekend. I haven't done one in what seems like forever. Frankly, I've been suffering from freebie hunter's fatigue. I appreciate hunts and I've participated in them as a shop owner and a hunter. But as of late there have been hunts with or all of the following problems: poorly organized, too large to fathom completion without coming face to face with insanity, unreasonably difficult, militant shop owners, rude hunters, and sadly the results are often an inventory stocked up with poor quality items.

Friday night I was already hearing good things about the KEYS TO THE VIP HUNT. I checked out the website and I was so happy to see that they had posted HINTS for each location. That cinched it, I was in! I'm a frugal person RL and SL and I love a bargain. But I'm also willing to pay for something that's got value so I had no problem spending 200L for the pass required for the hunt. On Saturday morning I enjoyed a few hours of hunting and had a great time. I was really pleased to find so many fantastic stores. I'm still unpacking but so far I've been really pleased with the goodies.

I was just over at the KEYS TO THE VIP HUNT to grab the URL and I noticed they are having problems with "cheaters." Someone has posted all the SLURLS to the prizes. And now shop owners are changing up the locations, and the organizer is scrambling to redo the clues, and..... *sighs* Come on. Really? I have my opinions, but in the interest of bedtime I'll leave them to a later date. I'm sure this issue won't go away anytime soon.

BTW!!! I'm loving big time on the *shinji* sports sneaks. They're super cute and really well made. Plus there's a belt 'n' other stuff to match also in the hunt.

Public Health Warning: Blog Drama Syndrome (BDS)

Yesterday a well-known blogger plurked that he's shutting down his plurk account. Naturally I was curious and clicked the link he attached. As it turns out he's retreating back into anonymity to work on projects that bring him joy both in RL and SL. Although I'll miss his well written posts I understand his need to make changes in order to focus on other goals.

Unfortunately the impetus for his decision was a squabble about freebies among bloggers and a resulting verbal assault (read: not meaningful or constructive) against this blogger. Now, I've been witness to these blogger dramas before. Initially I would peek at them like I would flip through a National Enquirer at a news stand. But quickly I realized that any information they provided was laced with negative energy. From that point on I've been more careful about what I choose to read and always proceed with caution and when I sense drama brewing.

But I was not careful enough. Last night I logged into SL and wandered around aimlessly. The malaise was overwhelming. I fell ill and took to my bed at approximately 8:15 p.m. I realized, as I lay there exhausted and with sadness running through my veins, that was suffering from the debilitating effects of Blog Drama Syndrome (BDS.) I had been so careful to protect myself, how could this happen to me? I'm convinced that it was not this once occurrence that did me in. However, it was indicative of how a seemingly benign issue like freebies vs. no freebies could expose the malice that festers within the minds among us. And it did me in.

Preliminary research tells me that a steady diet of butterscotch candies, good tunes, and plenty of rest that is taken in the company of good friends will help me to recover quickly. Let this post serve as a warning to you all, BDS is here and lurks amongst us. Protect yourselves. Think first before you read, write and respond. The next victim could be someone you love.

Linden Memorial Park - Now open

I've been fortunate to never lose any SL friends to RL mortality, but I've known people who have. The first time I experienced the death of a RL person in SL was when my SL Mentor's son passed away. It was probably the first time I really understood that even in SL we can't escape human tragedy. The family set up an in-world memorial and guests were able to set out floating candles with notes of remembrance. It was beautiful, but I think that eventually all of the prims were returned.

The second experience I had with the RL passing of an SL avatar was the death of Ginny Talamasca. I did not know Ginny personally but I was familiar with her work and loved her designs. When I heard the tragic news my eyes welled up and I spent a few melancholy days wandering the grid and contemplating the fragile nature of the human relative to the immortal avatar.

Yesterday was the 2nd Annual Day of Remembrance in Second Life. It is a day to remember those avatars that have lost their RL people. The memorial was held at the new Linden Memorial Park created by the Linden Public Works Department. This park is intended to be a place for permanent memorials, peace, and contemplation. You can get more information about the park's inspiration and creation from Brent Linden's blog post or Dusty Linden's blog post.

The pictures of the park hardly do it justice, you'll need to visit to capture the full experience. And an interesting note to this story...while I was in the garden looking at the flowers people have planted to remember their loved ones a man dropped in. It was my SL mentor and he came to plant a flower for his son. I haven't seen him for over 2 years. SL is a very small world, isn't it?

And while I'm on the subject of pictures I'd like to introduce you to my newest venture into the world wide web... Koinup!! I've been using Flickr for a long time now but a lot of people seem to enjoy Koinup so I thought I'd give it a go. I'm finally dipping my toes in the Koinup waters and so far I'm liking it. I'm all of 3 pictures in, but I don't wanna get overwhelmed.

I like to take snapshots in-world and send them via postcard to flickr. Turns out that can be done with Koinup (and linked from within Koinup to send to flickr too!) AND Talia Tokugawa wrote a quick and easy tutorial to auto-populate the koinup e-mail address so I don't have to type in the e-mail address each time.

I'm not sure yet the pros and cons of flickr v. koinup. If anyone out there would like to add their two cents I'd appreciate hearing from you. In the meantime I'll keep forging on and try my best to send in progress reports.

Two years ago I met someone in SL. He encouraged me to build and taught me some fantastic tricks. We found a small parcel on Areumdeuli and I set up a silks shop. I took a break for 4 months and when I came back he had moved on but the shop and the land was still there. All mine. I brokered a trade with a neighbor and was able to piece together a nice parcel where I spent a lot of my time. Over the past year and a half I've had a few different builds, but could usually be found there tinkering on something. Most recently I ressurected my main shop on the parcel but my heart just isn't in it. Tonight I tore down the shop. I still plan to maintain my corner shop at Juicy (been there since the walls were first going up) and my Xstreet SL account, but no more big shop.

So all that remains now is my municipal building and the basketball courts. Hardly builds that I would consider consequential in the grand scheme of SL, but nevertheless I'm struggling with pulling them up. I can take them in one piece and always keep to rez somewhere else, but I'm not sure that they would have the same charm. And what about the art that I house in the muni building? My seaside shanty is scarcely big enough as it is, how am I going to find wall space now? Some of the items in the building are things I rezzed many moons ago and have never taken them back into my inventory. To me there is a sadness about taking this all up and selling off the parcel. I think because it signifies the change that always makes me melancholy.

I should mention that this all came to light because I have a yearly premium coming due. And this time around I lack a compelling reason to renew. Wait. I have wonderful friends, a great little home, cute corner shop, and so much exploration to do so this is NOT a farewell Second Life post. I'm merely saying that maybe I've reached the next big moment in my SLife. Why do I feel like I'm falling off a cliff?

Pearls of Wisdom: Signs of a relationship gone bad

I’ve recently witnessed a friend suffer needlessly from heartache in SL. Her pain was so unnecessary and could have easily been avoided if the man she was involved with had been honest with her about ending their relationship. But he wasn’t. Instead, he chose to string her along with stories that always seemed to indicate that but for external problems they would be together. He would say things to her like, “I miss you so much. I’ve been working with the cable company to get a better connection. And I’m not sure why I don’t show online to you even when I am on. And I don’t know why you don’t get my IMs. And I’ve been so sick lately that it’s hard for me to get anything done.”

My friend did not ask to have a man in her SL. He came along while she was happy living her SL. She enjoyed his company so they spent more time together and slowly she opened herself up to him. And she gave him trust which is how she ended up believing his cocktail of excuses. But there was always doubt lurking in the corners. As it turns out he had taken serious interest in a girl that had been a friend of his for awhile. And instead of being honest to my friend he chose to feed her stories and hope. She was left wondering constantly what the state of their relationship was. Eventually she knew, but it took time to accept. It was especially difficult because the stories kept going although his behavior indicated otherwise.

This experience changed my friend. And that is why I want to hurt this man so bad because he has broken her spirit. There was no reason she had to suffer as she did. She’s a good person, she trusted him, and she wanted to believe that no one could treat another person as he was treating her. Unfortunately this situation is not unique in SL. As a service to others I have compiled a short but meaningful list of behaviors that can indicate that your relationship is on the decline:

1. Constant SL failures including but not limited to: IMs not working, showing false online/offline of self or others, chronic unsuccessful log-ins.
2. Unbelievably bad RL luck: illness of self or family member, loss of power, failing internet connection.
3. Inability to understand and utilize alternative forms of communication: phone, e-mail, chat programs.
4. A drastic reduction in time on SL.

What do you do if you can identify more than one of these in your relationship? Be prepared for a long drawn out period in which you’ll vacillate between ending the relationship yourself and hoping that everything will work out. Even if you end it yourself you’ll be left wondering, “did you jump the gun? Did you break it off too soon? Maybe he was telling the truth all along?” Oh it’s horrible. It really is. While I am not “the friend” I refer to in this post I have also been through this experience. And if you ask around I think you’ll find others who have as well.

Help! My english is disintegrating into nothingness!!! Lately as I'm chatting in SL I've noticed the most disturbing phenomenon. I will know perfectly well which word I should be using but I will type a different version.

For example:
DJ: Sound?
me: Can't here anything.
[here? noooooo, it should be "hear." And I know that but my brain forgot to mention the correct spelling to my fingers.]

More recently, and to my extreme horror, I commented on a well read blog with this sentence:
I think you’re blog just made my list of 2009 Happy Places.
[you're? really? wtf was happening that I couldn't manage to figure out that the conjunctive of "you are" was not what should have been typed?]

This problem is bleeding over into my pseudo RL tasks like plurking and blogging. Perhaps it's the speed at which I type. But so odd that I would default to the incorrect word on a regular basis. Short of proof-reading every quip I spew forth I am not sure what to do. I suppose I'll be thankful that I know better, hope that those around me will not judge me harshly for my inability to use my words & maybe one day my brain and fingers will once again be able to work together successfully.

21st Century Queen

In the race into the 21st century of technological wonders I often feel like I'm still tying my shoe at the start line. I admit, my venture into SL has brought me closer to my computer and expanded my knowledge about all things electrical. However, anytime someone starts talking about the details involved in making a computer operate, or maneuvering through the "world wide web" my eyes glaze over. [Even formulating that sentence makes me a bit light headed]

I'm a capable woman. I can fix a sink. I can change the headlights in my car. Last summer I conquered my sprinkler system went it went bonky. And my RL work requires an intellectual analysis of complex issues on a regular basis. But darnit all!! I just can't seem to wrap my head around these machines of the future that you refer to as "computers" and all the fancy things that a person can do with them.

When I found out I have a follower I was excited because I'm pretty sure it means that I can count on at least one person reading what I am writing today. BUT I was also reminded that I otherwise have no concept of what that really means for a blog. I've poked in the help section of blogger, I've set myself up on Google Analytics, I've tried to read about blog traffic (get more confused) and so on. Still, I just don't get it.

I often eavesdrop on conversations RL, SL, & plurklife, intently hoping that something in my brain will click and I'll finally understand. It hasn't happened yet. I like my computer and I want to tap into more of what it and I can do for each other. And I like my blog, it is a great exercise in writing and a way to share pictures and thoughts. This year I resolve to continue in my quest to grasp these concepts so foreign to me. My shoes are tied and I'm ready to go. Just bear with me, this is gonna be one whacky race!

Fashion Forward into 2009 with GW

I am often asked about my keen fashion sense. In fact, there isn't a day that goes by that someone doesn't say to me, "Queen, that is quite an outfit you have on! How did you manage to pull that together?" I suppose one might even say I'm known for my willingness to push the limits of style. But I can't do it alone. I depend on the aide of others to help keep me fashion forward.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with GW Raymaker to discuss the future of style in SL. He's an amazing DJ, an intrepid explorer, The Underground's Mr. 100, and a sexy adorable Italian stallion. I spent some time with him discussing Nietzsche, and the drinking habits of cats. Eventually the conversation moved to what he felt we could look forward to in 2009.

GW explained that this upcoming season we can expect to see boys as the hot new trend. Everyone should have at least one at their side, underneath, on top. Boys are the must have of 2009.

Calling cards are IN. We'll no longer be adding new friends to our list but rather we'll pass calling cards as a means to keep in touch.

Gestures are OUT. The squeaky name gestures are OUT. The hot and fresh newness for 2009 will be voice and sounds. Plenty of sounds. The most fashion forward stylies will seek out sounds ripped from the conversation of others in voice. HOT HOT HOT!

I asked GW what he saw as the coming style for men. He replied with no hesitation, "For men, stockings and shorts." Then he added, "All naked with stockings, and little cocks. Big cocks are out. Monster cocks are out of fashion." (Note to my boys: feel free to buck the trend on this one.)

He continued by declaring, "no neko, vampires, or slave masters." When I questioned him further on the topic, GW did note that, "Furries are in, I think they are very cute. Foxes, and wolves. But no animal sex."

I was surprised at his declaration that, "Gay is out." I mean, after all, one of the things he and I have in common is our love of men. Fortunately, although gay is out he continued by explaining that men having sex with men is IN. As is women having sex with women.

As for women's style, GW said a woman can wear anything that she wants. He also mentioned that baby clothes (children's clothes) very sexy, but that age play is OUT.

I hope that by sharing GW's insight with all of you that you'll be better prepared to meet 2009 with fashion in hand. If anyone needs me I'll be stocking up on boys and socks and making a list of the cutest furries I know!

I'm wishing wonderful things for everyone this holiday season and for the coming year!! I've tallied up my blessings and they outweigh the yuck stuff so I'm doing alright. Peeking into your SL Past - Blogger/Plurker challenge

This was me. One year ago today. Fascinating. What do I see when I look at this picture? A few things....
This was taken at Breezer's place when I was still participating in the Treasure Quest Hunts. It was a lot of fun, good exposure for my shop and I met some good people. But it was also an experience that reminded me that SL can have some "bad players" and so I moved on.
I also note that in this picture I was well accessorized. I guess I've been prim whoring for awhile now. And me loves it!
*deep sighs* The most significant image in this picture is my good friend, Dulcerebeca. For a long time she was always at my side. She was my companion, my helper, my dearest friend. What you can't see in this picture is the pain I was feeling at the time because of an SL relationship gone horribly wrong. Dulce was there to get me through the days. She was always there for me. We had wonderful fun together. She taught me to laugh in a foreign language. jajajajaja!!

She had some RL losses that she was coping with. I did my best to be there for her while she worked through them. Eventually she met a man in SL and she became consumed by him, and the drama that the relationship brought with it. Unfortunately she found pain and heartache in SL which gave her no relief from the pain and heartache of RL. Currently she's coping with RL and I hope that she can find a way to heal after the losses she's endured.

A year later, if you scroll through my flickr stream you'll notice that eventually she slowly fades from that place beside me. However, you'll also notice others that have come and gone through my SLife. While I may not be with them now, and sometimes I take a few names in vain, I have been lucky to know each of these people. I try my best to learn everyday and to take lessons from the interactions I have even the bad ones.

And now for the challenge:

The Underground Club Crawl and Open Courts

Last week The Underground presented it's very first Club Crawl. In fact, I'm going to proclaim that it was SL's very first Club Crawl. In my two years I've never experienced anything like it, I don't think anyone has. The concept was to bring the music community together for an all day event, 10 hours, 10 clubs, 10 DJs. And it worked magnificently!! I want to be sure to thank my co-conspirator, Briddy, for working hard to make this happen. And big thanks to all the club owners and DJs for believing in the concept enough to dedicate their day to The Club Crawl. And super huggy licky thank you to everyone that came along to participate in the madness. We're all ready planning Club Crawl 2 - Electric Boogaloo so be sure to keep your eye on this space OR IM me or Bridgitte Boucher for an invite to The Underground!
(p.s. Next time can someone tell me I didn't have panties on? I think i lost them in the 3rd hour and surprisingly no one mentioned it to me. nice. real nice.)

Oh wait! There's more! Yesterday was Sunday = Fun Day. I opened up The UG Courts for a quick pick up game between DJs. And it was funtastic! DJ Xavi Bandler vs. DJ Dane Palianta followed by DJ PlusMinus vs. DJ Briddy "The Diva" Boucher!! Two hours of music, 4 different sounds, avies running amok! Once again a unique party experienced offered up by The Underground. Again, big thanks to the DJs for bringing the tunes and huge thank you to the crowds for embracing the fun!!

I rolled into SL tonight dead set on a glorious pity party. Had planned to indulge in an all night festival of loneliness including bouts melancholy and finishing of with a plummet into a deep funk. I blame it on the moon. It's huge tonight. Well, that and this week compelled me to think deep RL. In fact, I'm so distracted by my thoughts that I even forgot it was Friday night. What?! How does that happen? Dunno. As it turns out I'm gonna have to put this bender on hold cuz i got the best friends ev-ah!

Oh, and here they are now! Briddy on a poke attack. See, she downed Init and Thrill in one go. And Solange sexing it up at Subterra (lovely establishment) DJ Evermore on tunes. Seismo the sweetest cyborg i know. I even had a few miscellaneous IMs popping in to check on me. How did they know I needed a check up!?

Why am I writing this? Because....I know some of my friends will read this and when they do I hope they will realize how much I appreciated and enjoy them. And to encourage everyone to cherish the peope around them, keep good friends, enjoy 2ndlife, and enjoy the people you share your 2ndLife with. I'm gonna post this now so i can get back to running between mad gesturing and afk to make hot tea. Err.....ummm....I mean to double shots of whiskey.

The Underground - It's about the music

Sometime in recent history Briddy Boucher (pronounced boo-shay) and meh-self decided that we needed to take over the world. Wait. I mean we needed a little organization to help our efforts for world domination. Wait. I mean that we had to find some way to corral the madness of what we do and bring it to the people.

It's not just about what I'm doing. Or the work that Briddy does (and yes, when she's not busy eating she does work.) It's about the people we do it with. We wanted a place to bring everyone together to join in the fun, to celebrate the inane, and to gesturbate at will.

And thus The Underground was born. The group charter of The Underground says it best:
It's about the music. We spend our days and nights enjoying good tunes with good friends. We do it where you might not expect but it always feels so good!

On Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 7 p.m. we celebrate our 100th member, GW Raymaker aka Mr. 100. NOTE: It's really not so much about having 100 members but rather a great excuse to give out a sausage cart, a TRUTH gift certificate, get GW in tight shorts, and to pah-tay like it's November 26Th!! woot!!

Last night I enjoyed the great pleasure of celebrating my 2nd rezzday with an incredible group of people. Thank you Bridgitte Boucher for putting it all together. You're a great friend and I'm blessed to have you in my lives. Thank you to all my friends that came to wish me a happy rezzday and for the fanstatic pressies you bestowed upon me. Your presence made me feel loved and appreciated. *smiles with warm thoughts* Thank you Snowkitty and Genki for your amazing tunes. You helped to make this a memorable night.

If I could have one thing for my rezzday it would be more time to get to know the people around me. Behind the avatar you are all incredible in your own way and I'm happy you've touched my life.

Queen's Musings - from funk to funky

Yesterday I was in a funk. It wasn’t good at all. The kind of funk that makes me want to hide away on a platform and torture prims where eventually I tire of their tiny screams and venture forth to collect the weeks freebies or cruise free sex sims for a noob boyfriend. Instead I chose to relax in my melon cooler, listen to some blues and diddle with Twain. In photoshop! Geez, git your mind out of the gutter.

Ding ding!! IM came in from Genki Dreamscape: Queen, wanna come here my set? Yes, tp please. And so I trudged off to the local furry club to mope around while I listened to Genki’s beats. OK, listen….NOBODY can mope when Genki’s on the desk. (it’s a joke, just laugh and keep reading.) To fit in better I transformed into Queenie the Cabbit, she’s so cute!! We had a slow start, he played the most amazing 11 minutes of his life and no one was there to hear it cuz the darn stream wasn’t in right. NOTE: I’ve come a long way in my music learning. I know this now cuz as I was listening in I thought, “this ain’t electro. And it ain’t speed garage.” So I says to Genki, “Genki, is it in yet?”

BOOM!! There’s the tunes I was in search of!!! From the moment his sounds hit my ears things started to change. As I waited for my attachments to load I sent out a few notices and tp’d in a few people. This was something that I HAD to share. HAD to.

Remember the funk I was in? Within moments of a few friends arriving the cloud had lifted and suddenly I was again at peace with the world of SL. Old friends, new friends, happy friends, even a sad one in the midst of it all…we were there together and enjoying the moment. Privately we all giggled as our HOOOOOOOS!!! and RRUUUUUUBGAS!!! caused a stir among the security staff; Vinnie and Bella earned the UG Hot Messes of the Day Award in recognition of their out of control accessorization; and I took a little time to reconnect with a very sweet friend.

At the end of Genki’s set I grabbed dear Mr. Ribe Oh and dragged him along to CodeBastard’s Rouge shops to pick up a freebie couples pose set. (ty Codie!) I pinned Ribe down and snapped a few pics, blogged, flickr’d and plurked, picked up a new friend in the frenzy (waves to CT!!), got mooned by Veyron, AND at the end of it all ushered in my 2nd rezzday nestled between two of the mostloving peoples I know, Codie and Gabby.

And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

My gosh, it's been forever since I've posted. Where have I been!?! Oh oh oh, I know! I've been taking the break I've needed for a long time. And what do I do when I break? I dunno. But I did manage to snap some pictures so I picked one filled with goodies to share. In my off time I like to explore SL to discover the wonderful things my fellow residents have created.

The picture above was taken at Wandering Spirits. Along with a small 50's themed urbarn grunge city the sim features Kali Mead's Neat Tricks Gallery and a really well done SL photography tutorial. (Note: The gallery is turning one and Kali is celebrating with a photo competition and music festival. Look here for more info.)

You might wonder who that cute little alien is in the picture. It's me!! If you know me well you know that I'm a whore for freebies. Some might say just a whore, but that's a different post. Thanks to Serenity Semple at Lucky Kitty Crew I was alerted to this super cute cyber bot avie available for $0L at Cyberbunker. It has a script to change the color of the suit and the glow. In addition even though it's a smaller avie my regular AO and dance animations work just fine with it. So much fun!! (see pic below for close up.)

Finally, check out the sky in the above pic, so Rouge! CodeBastard Redgrave recently released some Windlight settings for her Rouge Sim and they are available here on her blog. They were created to complement her sim, but I couldn't resist trying them out elsewhere.

Fascinating. Long time ago I was cruising through a sim. I think I was probably following up a lead on a freebie or something. Uusually when I stop in for a freebie I try to take a look around at the neighboring parcels to see what people are up to. I came across a little parcel called The Gutter: Punk Rock Ghetto. It's a little block long ghetto that leaves a person feeling dirty and violated. So yeah, I couldn't help but to like it enough to remember it and return a few times.

But listen, this is the part that compelled me to write today....I was looking around at my parcel, the sim, and the surrounding sims this morning. I noticed some water to the West and went to check it out and...there, ONLY 2 SIMS AWAY FROM ME....The Gutter: Punk Rock Ghetto.!!!!! Amazing!! Just another reminder to me as to why I like mainland cuz i love to take walks through sims, and just looky at what I can find soooo close to home!!!

Pearls of Wisdom - To each his own

A few weeks ago I was running amok playing with Four Yip's creations at her gallery at KMADD. I was dressed up in one of the costumes she had put out and was taking glorious piccies.

For a reason I now cannot recall I tp'd back to the gallery...oh yes, for the SLURL!!...and I came across Rawly Rousselot who writes for SL InWorld Today. We struck up conversation about Four Yip. He had never seen her creations. And then we talked about KMADD. I knew nothing of it. He filled me in on the wondrous world of KMADD society and I entertained him with a show of Yip costumes. He's a blogger and dropped a hint about his column and sure enough the next day, there I was in SL InWorld Today, stuck in a pose an dressed in nothing but panties and a tiny sweater. Figures, nearly naked. Again.

As I read the article I began to reflect on the community of people represented in SL InWorld Today. What caught my eye is a very swanky event planning operation and I couldn't help but to think how shiny and pretty the organization looks.

Then my mind switches to thoughts of the work I do with Bridgitte Boucher to put on events. While we are always professionals in what we do there is a certain down and dirty feeling that I get when our happenings come together. Often they are raw and organic. Upon reflection I conclude that I love the thought of how amazing our events turn out.

But then for a fleeting moment I wondered what it would be like to work within the shininess of this other group. The thought left more quickly than it came because I think what we do is wonderful and I love the means as much as the end.

Stepping back to contemplate I look around and see that within the SL world there is a spectrum for every facet of the community. We all choose to operate in different ways and naturally our efforts elicit different results. However, whether we have the shine or not, the important part is that we're here doing it, making it happen. And when we can find satisfaction in the things we do in SL we should celebrate the achievement.

It all started when Digital moved the bar at Digital Nation HQ. What do we do with the extra space, Queenie Pie? I mulled it over for a few minutes and thought I'd put up a few walls just to gauge the space. And then a little voice said, "this rooms needs a dance pole." "Right," I answered and continued my work until eventually I had a cozy little strip joint which I will henceforth refer to as my office. Naturally when one has an office there must be meetings, so I convened a meeting at Digital Nation HQ.

First to arrive was Thrill McMillan, Chairman of The Gangbang Committee. Here we are taking a few minutes to pose for a photo-op.

Shortly thereafter Tammie Slade, Director of the "I'll try anything once" Division, dropped in to try out the poles. Errr...umm...the dance poles. Solange Daviau , Fashion Advisor to DN, did a wonderful demonstration of latex quick change as well as a workshop on "backing that thang up". Kandy Rousell acted as Seargant at Arms with her delightful He-manesque flower power (ask her to show you. It's adorable.) Bridgitte "The Diva" Boucher, my Entertainment Co-Chair, wasn't there more than a few minutes before she was stripped down to a teeny bra and panties and tickling the Board of Directors with her feathers. Yes, the entire Board!! That girl got game! And of course Digital Francis, DJ as well as Administrator of Kink, was present to demonstrate the proper way to bite down on a badonkadonk.

It wasn't long before several more people arrived including DJ Init Hubble. He started by sexing up the joint in his long flowing cape, bag over his head and loin cloth. That man really knows how to work the ladies! He had an itch to spin so we cranked up the tunes and got it on at DNHQ!! During the next few hours in my office we debated the benefits of the hard gay hooooooo!!, tested the new furniture for durability, and vigorously advocated our positions on life after crash.

There's something so joyous about an insta-party. I love when an event transforms organically from a small gathering of friends in their undies to a life size event with a nearly full sim. At it's peak the place was a hot mess of avies, with pixels flying in every direction and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I love Digital so much cuz he indulges me when it comes to this sort of insanity, and i love my friends for taking the ride with me. AND, i love the new friends we meet along the way that aren't afraid to jump in and share a few of their nuts with us. N V T S, nuts!!

In my spare time I work with Bridgitte Boucher a.k.a. P Briddy to organize and host events, things, happenings. So, when our good friend Kandy "The Steampunk Doll" Rousell was ready to open her Steampunk Air Ship to the masses we were happy to help. I love a good party. I love it more when it's on a dirigible!!

One of the great aspects of SL is the opportunity to explore our imaginations and stretch our creative skills. For example, parties give me an opportunity to play in Photoshop. heeeeee! I once had an art teacher that was always after me to push the levels. Huh? One of the joys of exploring Photoshop is how easily I can slide the scales, push the buttons, tears things apart and put them back if needed all in the name of pushing my levels. I did that for the invite i created for the party and I'm thinking it turned out ok. Here it is:

This weekend Digital Nation celebrated the marriage of their own Joachimmsz Beck and his lovely girl, anoushka Klaar. The couple had a lovely ceremony at a little wedding themed sim in the sky, followed by dancing and picture taking.

The wedding reception was held at Digital Nation, and let me assure you it was THE event to be at. Friday night Digital and I stayed up decorating Digital Nation HQ, complete with tent, tables, flowers, candles, it was absolutely gorgeous and a wonderful surprise for the bride and groom as well as their guests. Here's one of the many reasons I love Digi, he has a great enthusiasm for creating an experience.

Digital Nation's MaXimus MiXer DJs Andy Seiling, Luisinho Rossini, Joa (the groom) and Digital Francis delivered some of their most amazing sets ever!!!! We celebrated into the night as the boys mixed some of the freshest most inventive sounds in SL. Oh oh OHHH!! Then, just when things were wrapping up an inspired Andy took to the decks for one more go at an after party set...but wait! there's more....riding the high of the day, Digital followed up with an after the after party set to close out the night!!

Hater Poles, who's on yours?

I was doing my Tuesday night stalking of DJ Grip Talon @ Club Dorian Gray when his sissy Elisha Richez dropped down and kicked me in the ass. She'd sent me a sweet gift earlier in the day but I hadn't yet had a chance to check it out. (good thing too, cuz apparently it's to be rezzed, not worn) She was good enough to rez a copy of it there on the dance floor.

Yep, that's it...her Hater Pole...it's glorious!! Four severed bloody heads lined up on a pole. What you can't see is that each one has it's own little tag so the world know exactly who dear Elisha has pegged for a hater. I love it, she's an inspiration...she's not afraid to speak her mind. She's all about the fun and good times and completely real. And she puts her building skills to good use...binkies, headphones, hater poles...

So, I guess the question I have for you is, do you have a list of haters? And if so, do you have it in you to cut off their heads and impale the remnants on a stick?

Queenie's 14 hour music-a-thon!!

Yesterday I woke up determined to get things done. It was Labor Day in the U.S. so I had one extra day off of work. My plan was to conquer the vendor for my shop, add a few things to the SLexchange box, and then relax awhile before logging into RL. But I wasn't content to listen to canned music so I had the bright idea to ask a few DJs if they would be available to spin for me and a friend while we puttered about in SL. And so it began.....

DJ Luigy aka Luigy Balhaus came over to start the day. He's one of my very first DJ friends in SL and has always been a sweetheart to me. Luigy brought along some brand new tunes and worked them over while he prepared a set for a radio broadcast this weekend. Three of us listened in. Thrill passed out on the couch (where he'd spend most of the next 14 hours), Tahra shaking her thang, and me pushing around prims and vendors. Eventually wonderful things come to an end and Luigy had to leave to take care of his own things. I sent the word out and a few minutes later DJ Parsifal Beck dropped in.

Parsi's set was magnificent. I was so happy to finally hear a full set as I'm usually coming in just as he finishes up so this was a real treat!! During his set a few more people started to trickle in and by the time he was done my little piece of SL had developed a steady flow of people and DJs including DJ Renanyoy Oh, DJ MartFader Schwager, DJSVEN Newman, DJ Briddy "The Diva" Boucher and to close out the night, DJ Goodes Bade.

Although I didn't get done what I needed to I had a fantastic time and I'm pretty sure my guests enjoyed as well. And I admit, here is something so delicious about standing on the rooftop of my muni-building listening to an awesome DJ while watching the guests mingle. I'm pretty sure we got the sim bouncing so hard that we nearly knocked the giant sculpty earth off it's axis!!!

Almost There @ Digital Nation

On Thursday night I organized and hosted the first of many Thursday night celebrations @ Digital Nation. I'm a Westie (West Coast USA) and forever putting my other SL friends to bed as I'm searching for some musical treats. It was only natural that I'd succumb to my needs and create my own buffet of sounds, and what a better place than my home away from home, Digital Nation.

As fortune would have it I was in the midst of a stalking session with DJ Grip Talon when I decided I needed a DJ. [Note to Grip: Please trim the bushes below your bedroom window, they are getting a bit thorny] He quickly gave into my charms and agreed to play the very first Almost There Party. I'm so glad he did because he delivered a wild set filled with mad beats and he kept the crowd captivated!! Keep your Thursday SL nights open, more fun to come!

Pearls of Wisdom - It ain't my business... IT IS NOW!!

I recently wrote a post in which I shared my thoughts on our responsibilities to others in the world of Second Life. After I wrote the piece I understood that the problem between AvieA and AvieB had subsided. However, it is my sad duty to report that not only has the issue that inspired the previous post not died down, but rather it is festering and infecting the lives of others in the community.

I was a witness to the problem first hand two nights ago and I'm still working through my head how to cope with this situation. Initially I was LIVID. Adrenaline rush kinda LIVID. Friends and I (including AvieA) were having a great time at a party when AvieB tp'd in and laid out some heavy handed bullying techniques which brought the fun to a screeching halt. I was nuts out of my mind that someone could do that, it was ridiculous! Really, it was the most insane thing I've seen someone do for.....I don't know....forever!! I quickly removed myself from the situation to avoid taking rash action and thus lowering myself to AvieB's level. But I haven't stopped thinking about what happened. It was too bizarre! Here I had finally had an opportunity to see something that up until now had been hearsay.

I've considered whether to include the details above in writing this post because I don't want to fuel this insanity. But I decided at least this part of the story is necessary to give insight as to how deeply this has all affected me.

You might wonder why I'm spending so much time thinking about this. Why do I really care? I'd say see my previous post. But also, when I see this happening I see a failure of humanity and it makes me sad. I can't wrap my mind around AvieB's behavior. I can't fathom why months later she is still continuing with this issue instead of dropping it and moving on. I've even tried to consider her side of the story. But I still don't understand what would compel her to be aggressive and take affirmative steps to bring another person down as I witnessed the other night. I will probably never understand.

At times like this I step out of Queen's brain into my RL person because SL can sometimes be a tricky and deceitful little bastard. I try to get some perspective by looking through the RL lens. Here, AvieA and AvieB, two RL people, are sitting at their keyboards and operating avatars as if they're reading off of an old Days of Our Lives script. But the problem is, at least from what I perceive, at least one of them is not having fun doing it.

What's going on in AvieB's RL life, mind, soul that she delights in her around the world power trip? I've seen RL pictures of AvieB because she's made them public. I've looked into a picture of her RL eyes as she poses with a RL friend. She looks like a happy attractive person with friends and activities to fulfill her life. I can't imagine what is so horrible in a person's RL that they have to come into Second Life and act the way they do. I rarely find answers when I wonder. And here instead, I found compassion for the person behind AvieB. My heart goes out to the RL person who needs to live in a persona whose existence seems to depend on wielding superficial powers that result in another's misery.

This was a hard post to write. I hesitated to write it because I'm not interested in engaging with either AvieA or AvieB to "take sides" and I fear there may be some backlash from this post. But I also know that whether we're in Second Life, or another social internet platform, there is a lesson to be learned from these people. I feel for both of these people because they are caught up in the nastier side of Second Life where people forget that there are humans behind the avie. Maybe, just maybe, they might read this and it might help. If not them, then maybe it will help another by reminding them that even in a world of pixels the way we conduct ourselves affects the people around us.

At times like this I am thankful for my RL and SL and the family, friends and love I have in both RL and SL that have helped me to develop the strength and thoughtfulness to be mindful of others and to never have to bring another person down in order to boost myself up.

Finally, Second Life is a place to be anything you want to be, do anything you want to do. In the immortal words of Viv Savage, "Have... a good time... all the time."

A change is in the air.

I know I'm not the only one that feels it. The end of summer and the beginning of the school year has always signified change. But I've noticed this week in SL that change is coming. Actually, it's here. The world of SL is always evolving, friends come and go, buildings go up and then disappear over night. These events are usually just a part of life, but sometimes things shift so drastically that one can't help but notice and be forced to react.

It may have started when my very good friend, Digital Francis, left for a 3 week vacation. I missed him before he left. And each day I miss seeing him online, but at least I'm comforted to know he'll return. To the contrary there are others I don't think I'll see again. I've finally come to accept that a couple of good friends have moved on to alts, and (cover your ears) to Real Life. Meanwhile a few of my friends have entered into relationships, and while I'm happy for them this can also mean that they aren't in my SLife as much or they are there but different. Then recently some friends have ended relationships, endured heartbreak, and severed ties with others, all of which affects my own interaction with them.

While some these events don't always impact me directly, they at least signify that SLife is different. I'm averse to change. It makes me uncomfortable. So, when SL slaps me in the face with change I get a bit sad......ummm.......melancholy.

I've found that, much like in RL, if I just make adjustments I can cope and often I can grow. I usually go back to the basics, back to what I enjoy most in SLife. I'll play with my prims, explore random sims, and re-visit old friends. I've also learned that this is the period where new friendships grow, and old friendships can be rekindled. While there is an uneasiness about what the future holds I must embrace this moment as a learning experience and as a gateway to new adventures in my SLife.

Time Zones @ Digital Nation

As a delegate of Digital Nation (and the Digital Nation Boss) I had the great pleasure to present Time Zones @ Digital Nation this past Sunday. I could not have done it without the lovely Aurora Fairey who worked hard with me to put this together and bring the event to life. And of course Digital Francis, a good friend and an inspiration. (love you, Digi)

During this 12 hour event the crowd was entertained by MaXimus MiXers DJs Luisinho Rossini, Joachimmsz Beck and Digital Francis as well as DJs Twain DeCosta, Init Hubble and and new rising star, DJane Snowkitty Schmooz. These DJs are some of the best in SL, and each delivered an unforgettable set. They must have been doing something right because a few times the sim filled up and we couldn't pack anyone else in!

I had a great time as well. There were moments when, during all that was going on, I'd halt everything. And listen. All of my senses honed in on the music, my body and my mind become intensely focused on each beat. Anticipation builds. Then (this is my favorite part) the music hits me like a wave crashing against the shore. Shivers runs through my body. And there I am, stunned, amazed and needing more.

Thank you Aurora, Digital, wonderful DJs and sexy guests. I look forward to seeing you soon at future Digital Nation events!!

Back to School @ Rouge Sim

On Saturday, classes were back in session at Rouge Lounge. Naughty school-girls ran amok, giving wedgies, throwing erasers and molesting fellow students. DJs Professor Nexeus Fatale and Miss Cyberpink were there to entertain us with some unforgettable music lessons. And of course Headmistress Codie was present to administer swift punishments with her ruler. And I'm sure she took some girls into detention for more...ummm.....disciplinary action.

Thank you to all of the students that arrived in a timely fashion. To those that were tardy or played hookie completely, "I'm telling!!"

Pearls of Wisdom - It ain't my business. Or is it?

I usually try my best to abstain from getting into other peoples messes. Much like the childhood game of telephone communications in SL become distorted and embellished upon. So any action by me would be based on false information and probably result in a bigger mess. And generally in time these messes clean themselves up and I can continue with my happy SLife.

Once in awhile the trouble festers and grows. Over a period of time I hear the story retold. Eventually, when pieced together the picture becomes more clear. Recently I heard news of trouble brewing in SL amongst a group of people I socialize with. As the story goes one person was using heavy handed techniques to push another person out of a social circle. It was essentially, "it's her or me, take your pick" combined with an under the breath "if you don't pick me you'll be sorry." The fist time I heard this I rolled my eyes and thought, "oh brother, who does she think she is?" Then I heard it again. I thought, "maybe I should just keep clear of this for awhile." And then I heard that her technique was working. That's when my brow furrowed and I began to ask, "why are people letting this happen?" The simple answer I got was, "Because it isn't me, so why should I bother?"

Answers like this make my stomach turn. We are all part of a community and its absurd to think there is no consequence when we sit idly by while our neighbors are attacked. When situations arise, like the one I've described above I'm reminded of this quote:

Sometimes I can't find words of my own to express myself. Or someone does it so much better. Here, Mr. Niemöller says in a few brief words what would take me an eternity to convey. I'm sharing this with you (my 3 readers and a drop in) today because it has been helpful to me more times than I'd have liked. It is inevitable that you may find yourself in a similar situation as me and I'd encourage you to keep this quote in mind when deciding how you'd respond.

Note: The actual quote varies depending on what resource one refers to. At this time I am more concerned about sharing the essence of the quote rather than a historical dissertation on it's origin. Plenty of google hits if you're wanting more.

Secret Agents and Betrayal, The Main/Alt Dilemma

Alts (alternative character/avatar) are inevitable. I don't know an avie in SL that hasn't come from a main (main/original avatar) or gone off to live as an alt. I find that typically a person takes an alt to escape the drama of their main, to explore SL in peace (away from the hustle and bustle of their main's active lifestyle), or perhaps to engage in behaviors that might not otherwise be acceptable among their current social circle.

Not many people know that Queen started as an alt. The avatars that my original main spent time with were indulging in a life of drama. The main could not log on without a "we need to talk." Meanwhile, my mind was curious about other aspects of SL, places that I wanted to explore first on my own. Ummmm, in private. *winks* And so I decided it was time for a new avatar, an alt. Being a Lucky Chair fanatic I thought a Q name would be lucrative, thus Queen was born. Eventually, Queen's life became much more fun than the main's. The new avatars and new experiences kept her coming back and slowly the original avatar faded away and Queen morphed into my main.

During that time I recall having pangs of guilt about not logging in as the main. About not even stopping in to say hello. I suspected the friends the main had wondered why I was logging in less often, but I didn't really think they'd be bothered by my absence. As it turns out, the friends of my main were hurt that I went away without telling them. At the time I felt bad about it, but I couldn't really relate to what they felt.

Recently I've have a few experiences with my old friends disappearing because their main becomes so entangled in drama that it's easier to start a new life in a new sim. Often I don't know what happened until I find later they entered witness protection program . . . as an alt.

I've also made new friends, who are alts coming in for one reason or another. But, not yet ready to commit to their alt, they take their enjoyment of Queen and disappear.

Then of course are the avatars running around as secret agent alts coming in to spy on someone. Come on, I know you've done it.

At what point does the person's actions cross from a need for privacy into an act of betrayal?

A few weeks ago a good friend who was gone for a few months came back into the SLworld. I should have been elated, but I was disturbed and upset. I did not know it was her. She was outed by a mutual friend. Can you imagine the thoughts running through my mind? How could she abandon me like she did and not even come back and say as much as a hello? It was this moment that I felt as though all that we had experienced was for nothing. Our minds had clicked so well, we had so many good times together, all the memories of the fun and frolicking were now marred by her betrayal of our friendship.

It was as though she had tossed me into the wastebasket along with the other trash she had tossed out when she abandoned her main. I recognized that she needed a break, and maybe even a fresh start, but she didn't take me with! I worked myself into a fantastic frenzy. And just as I was peaking an IM popped up. Hello. Ahhhh, it was her! As it turns out, her reintroduction to SLociety was not as she planned and we quickly were up to our old banter. But...ugh...it was a horrible feeling.

And so it seems that the closer the friendship, the tighter the bond, the more likely that hiding an alt will be a crushing blow to those one leaves behind. The next time your alt is out for naughty fun, secret agent duty, or escaping from a crazed ex don't forget those people behind the avatar that have invested time, emotion, and thoughtfulness into your friendship.

Latex Ball @ Rouge Sim

Oh what a night!! Squeaky fun was had by all!! Last week the plurkites were howling for a party to welcome back our Codie. At the same time Codie was immersing herself in Hugo's Designs latex. It wasn't difficult to see that the Rouge sim was about to be invaded by latex clad revelers in search of beats and an empty pole. I quickly set to work to get this party started. Checklist: DJs, Latex, powder, baby oil.

The guests cavorted about the Rouge sim in the sexiest, shiniest latex available. Codie and her loves treated us to some entertainment in open chat that nearly had me in a blush!! Eshi Otowara kept Crap Mariner on a tight leash for most of the evening, allowing her free time to shine a dance pole. (Note: Crap is one of the most well mannered bot-pets I've met.) AND Oh my wows!! DJanes Elisha Richez and Shad Raffke graced us with their techno beats and their stunningly mad mixes!! (*pats herself on the back for a hawt booking*.)

It was a hot sticky Sunday and we was busy taking it old school. The unnaturally clever minds of Bridgitte Boucher and Moa Soderstrom had invited the residents of SL to party like the day they was rezzed. The directions were to create an new avatar (noobie, newbie, noob) no more than two days prior to the event. Come only with what your Linden mama gave ya.

DJs Init Hubble and Adamatic Aeon spun to the delight of the crowd. A box of party favors (gestures and a few dangerous attachments) was set out for a little extra somethin' somthin'. Our noobies ran amok while we all tried our best to figure out who was who.

In attendance for the event was, in no particular order:

Enet Mubble (Thrill McMillan) - cousin to Init Hubble and arguably the more intelligent and better looking cousin.
No Weezles (Init Hubble) - Quiet moody artsy fartsy musician type.
Grzezba Szczepanski (Ryz Uriza) - Spent most of the event in the buff and cavorting about wearing a giant skull.
Lickmy Minotaur (Bridgitte Boucher) - Girl tricked out her avatar, dang! She one bad mammajamma.
BeavisTheGreatCornholio Moonites (Moa Soderstrom) - Insane. just...just...insane.
Lisa Drumheller (as herself) - Arrived in style wearing vintage "box attached to right hand."
Sunday Jarvis (as herself) - Danced the evening away in her worst primmy bling shoes, overdone make up and static mono-colored hair. (I'm pretty sure she's got an escort job lined up if she wants it.)
Moddychacha Mavendorf (yours truly) - Overheard reciting the noobie mantra, "hello. where are you from?"
amens Bookmite - The cutest of the crew in lovely cardboard box.
Shefrowns Gothly (Delaynie Barbosa) – Delightfully filled with sorrow.
Stila Gothly (Kandy Roussel) – I think she was born hawt!
Madisen Tandino (Cheap imitation of herself).
Ideal Flow and Evermore Noel appearing as themselves brought a hint of class to the event. On the other hand GirlyGirly Twine, Bad Sorbet, and Candyz Baxton were in attendance and I’m wondering now if they truly were noobies lost on their way to a free sex extravaganz.
Finally, the beauty of the ball was WillfellateFor Quan (Adamatic Aeon) – decked out in her finest girl next store attire and 5 o’clock shadow she made sweet humping love to the guests ‘til we all had a hint of bile tickling at the back of our throats.

Words cannot adequately described the madness of the night. I hope these candid shots convey the onigokko running, box wearing, ding fries are done shouting, ass spanking good time that was had by all.

Adventures in SL: Zee and Zora's Little Slice

I spend a lot of time in Second Life far away from my little piece of land poking my nose around other people's build, fascinated by the talent and creativity of our residents. The other day I decided that maybe I need to spend some time at my home sim, visiting with the neighbor's, have a cup of coffee, watching the jellyfish go by. Huh? Jellyfish? Queen, what are you talking about?

Simple. I've got the best sim neighbors ever! I've had my home in the Areumdeuli sim for over a year now and I attribute my longevity in the same location to my wonderful neighbors Zee Pixel and Zora Spoonhammer, owners of Zee and Zora's Little Slice. The interaction I've had with Zee and Zora since in the sim is a lesson in trust, and kindness between strangers in a virtual world. Usually a person can't get a tour of my place without a few minutes from me about how great my neighbors are. And, in addition to being good, solid, upstanding residents of Second Life, Zora developer and content creator, and Zee supports her with promotion and distribution. Wow! What a team!!

Maybe you'd like a nice place to relax and visit with friends while you watch the jellyfish float by? You can! Thanks to Zee and Zora.

How about some snake charming in the Curiosity Shop? Yep, that's a Zee and Zora. Picnic by the pond? Zee and Zora, too. Zora created the intricately detailed pond, fish, water...there's a construction kit in the Curiosity shop so you can have one too!

(psst, check out the bots in the sky behind me! It just occurred to me, is my robot fetish showing?)

I bet most of you don't know that if your draw is set high enough you can see a Giant Topographical Scupltie Earth (with real time cloud data) from the balcony of my shoppy. Yes, again...Zee and Zora.

One of my favorites: The bots that shuttle supplies across the property. I often will sit on the stoop of my muni building and watch the little buggers work, work, work. It's so easy to explore all of these wonderful creations, just tp into Zee and Zora's Little Slice and check the directional signs.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!!! In addition to building so many wonderful things in-world and making them available for you to take home (check the Curiosity Shop), Zee and Zora create tools to help other SLer's create. Check out CCCCybernetics for access to Zura's newest creation, a "morph target UV mesh library and models for AC3D." For more info you can check out the Second Life Forum. Content creators, this is a must have. MUST. If you scroll down while visiting their site, you'll find Zora's Sculpted Prim Export Plug-in for AC3D. Amazing. But, this is where my head starts to spin from all the tech lingo, so I'm going back to sit on my stoop, sip a gin fizz and watch the worker bots do their thing.
